Douglas Motorsport Impress at F3 Autumn Trophy

The 2016 Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy took place at Snetterton over the weekend of October 29/30, and the Douglas Motorsport drivers put on an impressive display, with a car in the top 3 in every race, including 2 cars in the top 3 of race 3.

2061226.0003Recently crowned German Formula 4 Champion, Joey Mawson, made his F3 debut with Douglas Motorsport and ran at the front of each race and challenged for the lead. He went into race 4 with a chance of winning the title and would have started on pole as a result of the pace he showed all weekend, however the worsening fog at the racetrack meant the final race was called off, handing the title to Enaam Ahmed, who led after race 3.

2061086.0003Former Ginetta Junior champion Jamie Caroline, after spending some time testing the car the weekend previous, impressed over the weekend and his continued improvement resulted in a third place finish in race 3, giving Douglas Motorsport a double podium finish, 2nd and 3rd place. After race 3 Jamie was in fifth place overall and was in contention for an overall third place finish, had race 4 gone ahead.

Overall it was a successful weekend for the Douglas team, with two drivers gaining their first experience of British F3, and only losing out to a driver with a full season of F3 behind him. Enaam Ahmed, who drove for the team for the entire 2016 season, was able to use the experience he gained with the team to win the overall trophy, and it is a testament to the entire Douglas team and the experience within the race team to see former drivers develop and go on to further success. Enaam’s former Douglas team-mate,  Thomas Randle, is now impressing in the Formula V8 3.5 Series. In the series finale, and only his second meeting of the series, he managed to lead the race for a time before finishing in an impressive 11th place.

Caroline Confirmed for Douglas Motorsport

Former Ginetta Junior Champion Jamie Caroline will enter the upcoming Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton (29/30 October) with Douglas Motorsport.

Caroline will step up to British F3 having raced in the F4 British Championship this year, where he finished 10th overall taking a win on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch, along with four other podium finishes across the season.

Prior to that, Caroline won the 2015 Ginetta Junior Championship following a thrilling title fight with Senna Proctor, with the 17-year-old coming out on top by virtue of race wins after both drivers finished level on points. He claimed the 2014 Ginetta Junior Winter Series title and also enjoyed success in karting, finishing as runner-up in the 2011 MSA British Cadet and Super One Championships, before graduating to European level karting.

Caroline said: “I can’t wait to race in the Duo BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton this weekend! I enjoyed a really good test last week and with a team as well prepared as Douglas Motorsport, I think we can score some really strong results in Norfolk.”

Wayne Douglas, Team Principal of Douglas Motorsport, added: “It is great to be running Jamie in the Duo BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy and we are sure that he will go well at Snetterton. We know that he is a very talented young driver, as evidenced by his success in Ginetta Juniors and British F4, and we are looking forward to continuing his development as he steps up to British F3.”

The 2016 Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy enables drivers to get their first taste of British F3 whilst also offering additional mileage for those drivers remaining with the championship for a second campaign.

Joey Mawson, the recently crowned German Formula 4 Champion, will race in the upcoming Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton (29/30 October) with Douglas Motorsport.

Mawson, who hails from Sydney in Australia, will make his debut in the one-weekend, four-race championship in Norfolk, fresh from his success in Germany where he won the title following a year-long battle with Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick. He took 10 wins along with six other podium finishes across the year and will now finish off 2016 by racing in British F3.

The 20-year-old finished third overall in his first year of German Formula 4 in 2015 and prior to that, raced in the French Formula 4 Championship, finishing fourth overall in 2014 as he made his debut in single-seaters. Mawson also enjoyed success in karting, entering both the CIK-FIA European and World Championships in the KF category, having made the step up from domestic racing, where he finished as runner-up in the Australian Rotax Nationals in 2012.

Mawson said: “The opportunity came as a bit of a surprise, mentally I had already started to focus on the off season and onto winter testing. Now it’s quickly back to focusing on a race weekend. It’s a great opportunity to be back in a car again and have a race meeting while learning a new track at the same time.

“I’ve never driven the BRDC Formula 3 car before, although there are some things that will be familiar like the Pirelli tyres. It will be nice to drive a slightly faster car as I prepare for the next step in my career during 2017.”

Wayne Douglas, Team Principal of Douglas Motorsport, added: “It is great to be able to confirm that Joey will be in one of our cars for this weekend’s Duo BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton. He is a really quick driver, as he proved this year by taking the German F4 title, and we are really excited to see what he can do in the Tatuus-Cosworth British F3 car.”

Harper is Rookie Champion for 2016

Harper is Rookie Champion for 2016

Daniel Harper is the 2016 Ginetta Junior Rookie Champion.

Dan qualified in 6th position, a row behind his two rivals for the rookie champsionship – Seb Priaulx and Harry King, which meant it was going to be a battle to keep his lead in the rookie championship. The adandonment of the first race due to the track curfew and an accident involving pole sitter Dave Wooder meant a rejig of the grid for the re-run of the race on Sunday morning, as Wooder and other drivers were unable to compete. Harry King profited most among the rookie contenders, moving up to the first row. The race saw Douglas Motorsport’s Stuart Middleton take the win by .062 seconds with some amazing driving and a drag race to the checkered flag. This confirmed Stuart as the Ginetta Junior vice champion. Behind Stuart, Harry King finished best of the rookie contenders, but Harper was able to finish ahead of Seb Priaulx which was to prove crucial in the battle for the rookie title, as it gave Dan a 20 point lead going into the last race.

In the final race of the season, Harper knew exactly what he had to do to claim the title, as Middleton was in the thick of the action at the front of the race, Dan made sure to stay out of trouble and not let Seb Priaulx get too far ahead. As Middleton made a great move on he last lap to take 3rd place, Seb Priaulx was able to finish in 4th, but a 9th place finish for Dan was enough to take the Rookie championship.

Harper has gone from scholarship winner to Rookie champion, while Stuart Middleton has gone from scholarship winner the previous year and 2015 Autumn trophy champion to Vice-champion in 2016. It’s a testament not only to the scholarship program but also to the teamwork at Douglas Motorsport and the ability of the team to help in the development of young drivers and allow them to perform at their full potential. This 2016 season Douglas Motorsport has produced 3 vice champions (Stuart Middleton – Ginetta Junior, Will Burns – Ginetta GT4 Supercup, Chris Ingram – Ginetta GT4 Supercup AM class), a Rookie Champion (Daniel Harper – Ginetta Junior), a 4th and 5th place in the British F3 championship (Thomas Randle, who produced one of the drives of the season when winning at Spa-Francorchamps and Enaam Ahmed who claimed a 3rd, 2nd and 1st place at the very first race weekend).
