Burns takes Title Decider to Last Lap of the Season

Burns takes Title Decider to Last Lap of the Season

Will Burns took the fight for the GT4 Supercup title right to the very last lap of the last race at Brands Hatch yesterday (Oct 2nd). Although Burns finished the season with the most points, Wrigley took the title after applying the dropped points rule (1 dropped point for Wrigley, 10 dropped points for Burns), which meant Wrigley finished only 3 points ahead of Burns.

In 3rd place for most of the race, Burns made a lunge for second on the last lap and took the position, only to be followed through by Tom Wrigley who had tracked Burns for the entire race. Burns used all of his racing skill to hold Wrigley back on the last lap while giving Jack Mitchell every opportunity to make a move on Wrigley and take third place. For much of the last lap the drivers were almost three abreast, but Wrigley managed to maintain third place and take the Championship for 2016.

The weekend had started in the best way possible for Burns, taking pole position by a full second. Tom Wrigley could only manage 10th place. During race 1, Burns lost first position on lap 2 but was able to regain the lead on lap 7 and pull away to finish the race in first place, cutting Tom Wrigley’s championship lead to only 12 points.

In the AM class, Chris Ingram took 2nd place in the overall standings after Colin White secured the championship after the first race of the weekend.

To start the final race 12 points behind the leader was a testament to both Burns’ abilities and determination, and, to the skill and dedication of the Douglas Motorsport race team. This 2016 season Douglas Motorsport has produced 3 vice champions (Stuart Middleton – Ginetta Junior, Will Burns – Ginetta GT4 Supercup, Chris Ingram – Ginetta GT4 Supercup AM class), a Rookie Champion (Daniel Harper – Ginetta Junior), a 4th and 5th place in the British F3 championship (Thomas Randle, who produced one of the drives of the season when winning at Spa-Francorchamps and Enaam Ahmed who claimed a 3rd, 2nd and 1st place at the very first race weekend).

Set for Prototype Cup

Randle to Pilot LMP3

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Douglas Motorsport will be running in the inaugural Prototype Cup, we are pleased to announce that Thomas Randle will partner Mike Newbould in the Ligier JS P3 LMP3 car at Snetterton on 8th and 9th of October.

Successful 2016 Season

Thomas Randle enjoyed a successful debut season with Douglas Motorsport, finishing 4th overall in the British F3 championship. One of the highlights of the season was Randle’s win at Spa-Francorchamps when he came from 9th on the grid to take the lead on the final lap and win the race. His win consisted of an impressive multiple overtake and bump draft maneouvre through Eau-Rouge.

The Douglas Motorsport expansion into LMP3 and the Prototype Cup confirms the team as leaders in driver development. We are already successful in Ginetta Junior, Ginetta GT4 and British F3, and the move into LMP3 adds another level of progression for young drivers within the team. LMP3 is a suitable next step for drivers who come through the various Ginetta series and also for drivers coming from single seater series. It marks an exciting new phase for the team.

Douglas Motorsport move to new British Prototype Series for 2017

Douglas Motorsport move to new British Prototype Series for 2017

Douglas Motorsport today announced that they will move up to the new British Prototype Cup in 2017. Afterenjoying success in Ginetta Junior, Ginetta Supercup and British F3 in 2016 Douglas Motorsport have now purchased a Ligier JS P3 LMP3 car.

The team’s Ginetta GT4 Supercup driver Mike Newbould has been confirmed as their first driver for the new series and will test the Douglas Motorsport Ligier at the Snetterton on October 3/4 just before the first race of the series.

Wayne Douglas, Team Owner, Douglas Motorsport:
“We are going in a bit of a different direction with the Prototype Cup, but I think it’s going to be a great direction for the team. We have watched the progress of LMP3 teams recently, and with the introduction of the Prototype Cup and a full season series for 2017, decided it was the right time to purchase a Ligier JS P3. Mike tested the car at a recent United Autosports test day and loved it. We have a number of drivers who want to get involved and, ideally, we would like to run a second car in this series next year. It’s an exciting new path we are taking, with added pressure and new challenges, but we are sure we can add to our success in Ginetta and BRDC F3.”

About LMP3

In the pyramid of “Le Mans Prototypes”, LMP3 is now the first step on the ladder before moving up to the LMP2 and LMP1 classes (the latter in the FIA WEC and 24 Hours of Le Mans).

The LMP3 can be built by five manufacturers which have been designed by the ACO : Ginetta, Ligier, Adess, Dome and Riley. They are very close to those of the current LMP2 (closed cockpit, carbon chassis with tubular steel roll cage). The powertrain consists of a Nissan 420 bhp  V8 engine, and an X-Trac gearbox. It is identical for all chassis, and marketed by the ORECA company which also provides specific assistance to teams

Douglas Motorsport Drivers make Podium in Season Finale

Douglas Motorsport Drivers make Podium in Season Finale

The finale of the 2016 British F3 season took place at Donington race track, on the weekend of September 10-11. The first two races of the weekend saw no podium finishes for the Douglas Motorsport drivers but they ended the season with a double podium in the season finale, Enaam Ahmed taking 2nd place  with Thomas Randle in 3rd. It was a successful ending to what can be considered a successful campaign for Douglas Motorsport and the return of Formula 3 to the British motorsport calendar.

Enaam Ahmed, Douglas Motorsport

“I am happy to finally get back on the podium! I’ve been there or thereabouts for a number of races and I finally got my act together and put it on the podium so I’m really happy. The team have done a really good job and the car has been really fast here. This was the first time me and Thomas have been able to race against each other and it was a proper hard and fair race. Two Douglas Motorsport drivers on the podium is great!”

Thomas Randle, Douglas Motorsport

“It’s good. After the disappointment of yesterday and the round before at Snetterton, to come away with a podium in the final race is great. We’ve had the speed all weekend to win but sadly we couldn’t convert it yesterday.

It was a tough start to the race but fortunately I managed to get Matheus Leist and then Harrison Scott into the hairpin. I managed to throw the car in at the last moment so he didn’t have any opportunity to defend and then I was able to have a battle with my team-mate, which we really haven’t done all year. This is a good way to end the championship!”

Douglas Drivers Quick in Testing at Donington

Douglas Drivers Quick in Testing at Donington

In advance of the final race meeting of the 2016 BRDC British F3 champioship at Donington, a test day took place today, September 8th at the East Midlands track.

Douglas drivers were very quick throughout the day, finishing 2nd and 3rd fastest in the morning session with Randle pipping Ahmed to second pace by .071 seconds. The second session saw Thomas Randle finish at the top of the classification, with Enaam Ahmed further back in 7th.

The evening session saw Thomas Randle top the classification with team mate Enaam Ahmed in 3rd place. Both drivers and the team are hoping that they can bring these quick speeds into the racing at the weekend.
