Middleton_02 (5)It was a weekend of mixed results for the Douglas Motorsport at Rockingham last weekend in the Ginetta Cars Junior Championship.

Stuart Middleton qualified in 4th place for race 1. By the end of lap 2 he had made his way into the lead, a lead which he held til the checkered flag to give him valuable championship points, although current championship leader Will Tregurtha finished one place back in second.  This order was reversed in race 2, which was delayed from Saturday due to torrential rain, with Tregurtha winning from Middleton.

Podium-HarperKingWoodDouglas Motorsports rookie driver, Daniel Harper, started in 14th position, but a great drive saw him pick up a number of places to finish in 7th overall and gain third place on the rookie podium, giving him vital points in the Rookie competition and points for Douglas Motorsport in the overall team competition..

Race 3 proved to be the least succesful of the weekend for the Douglas Motorsport team, with Middleton and Harper finishing in 10th and 11th place respectively, picking up vital points in the race for the overall, team and rookie championships.

Review of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup Weekend  at Snetterton, 27-28th August

The Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup visited Rockingham circuit last weekend for rounds 15,16 and 17 of what so far has been a championship dominated by Tom Wrigley.

After taking second place outright in the championship with 3 podiums last time out at Knockhill, this time Will Burns re-ignited the fight for first place by gaining 75 points on leader Tom Wrigley, and blowing the race for the Championship wide open. Although Burns wasn’t able to occupy top step on the podium at Rockingham, his consistent performances, combined with a poor weekend for Wrigley, were enough to close the gap at the top of the Championship table to only 18 points.

burns-02 (2)

As the cars made their way to the grid for round 15, the heavens opened which made for an interesting race. Burns was quickly up to 2nd place and for the rest of the race scrapped with Carl Boardley for that position, with each driver swapping position numerous times throughout the race. Burns however finished in second place, and with Wrigley a non finisher, this meant Burns gained valuable championship points.

Ingram_02In the amateur class, Chris Ingram finished in 3rd place, giving him his 5th consecutive podium finish. He was to maintain this standard through rounds 16 and 17 where he finished 3rd and 1st respectively, meaning Chris has managed a podium finish in each last seven rounds.

In the second race of the weekend, Will Burns started from second on the grid due to his second place in race 1. Race 1 winner and polesitter for race 2, Jamie Orton, had a trouble free lights to flag race but behind him Will Burns was in a major tussle with Tom Hibbert for second place. With Will Burns in 3rd place, Tom Wrigley had made his way up from last on the grid. Will Burns made a move on Hibbert for second prompting Wrigley to make a lunge to pass both cars. However, Wrigley careered into the side of Burns car. This incident put Wrigley out of the race and brought out a red flag. The race ended with Will Burns in 3rd position after the results were rolled back to the previous lap.
Race 3, live on ITV4, showed what a competitor Will Burns is. Starting in 3rd place he maintained his position for a number of laps. Second place man Callum Pointon made a move on leader Mark Davies and was joined on the outside by Will Burns who looked to take advantage of the tussle in front of him. However, Burns seemed to envisage what was to happen, Davies and Pointon tangled, forcing Pointon off. Had Burns held his position on the outside of the two he would surely have been taken out too, but he was able to avoid contact and slip into second place. He held off Jamie Orton in 3rd position for the remainder of the race while also managing to stay close enough to Davies to challenge for the lead.

Next up is Silverstone on 17th September for the penultimate weekend of the Champsionship. Will Burns has ensured this will be an exciting weekend for him and Douglas Motorsport after blowing the championship wide open.

Review of the Ginetta GT4 Supercup Weekend  at Knockhill, 13-14th August

The Michelin Ginetta GT4 Supercup visited Knockhill circuit last weekend, a weekend which included the postponed race from Snetterton 2 weeks earlier.

Will Burns continued to add to his impressive haul of podium places at Knockhill at the weekend, including a first place finish which gave him his second win of the season. His impressive results, combined with the absence of Jamie Orton at Knockhill have moved him clear into second place in the championship. In the amateur class Chris Ingram finished with a total of four podiums, which included 3 second places and a race win.

The first of four races in Scotland was the rescheduled reverse grid race from Snetterton, although it was not a good one for Burns. In second place, Burns made a move for first but contact put him virtually out of the race, finishing four laps down. Chris Ingram finished the race in second place in the amateur class giving him his first podium of the weekend.

In the second race of the weekend (the first round proper at Knockhill), a collision meant the race had to be restarted. The restarted race resulted in another second place finish for Burns, once again behind Wrigley, the championship leader. The amateur class finshed with an identical 1-2 as race 1, Douglas Motorsport’s Chris Ingram in second place once again.

Podium_06Race 3 was no different for the Pro class, first and second place the same as race 2. Wrigley had 3 wins out of 3 for the weekend, but as he went for a 4th successive victory on Sunday afternoon, a collision saw his hopes of a race win dashed, this gave Burns an ideal chance to capitalise, which he did after spending a number of laps in second place behind sizing up the race leader Hibbert. When Burns spotted a gap he made his move and didnt look back, taking race victory and putting himself clear in second place in the championship, capitalising on the absence of Jamie Orton over the weekend.

After enjoying a successful Saturday, which included 2 second places, Chris Ingram capitalised on Colin White’s retirement in race 3 to take the race win. Race four saw White back to take the race win and Chris Ingram placed second, rounding off a great weekend, apart from the amateur class results Chris place between 6th and 8th in the overall race results over the weekend and sits in second place in the amateur championship.

Ginetta’s flagship championship, the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup is an ideal stepping stone into global motorsport for any aspiring racing driver. As a BRDC qualifying championship, it is the go-to grid for stars of the future.

Up until the summer break, the headlines were all about one man, Tom Wrigley. He’s won six of the opening 10 rounds and when he’s not first, he’s been on the podium. As the only driver to have picked up a trophy in every race, it’s not surprising to see him leading the championship by 68 points as we approach the halfway mark.

Bringing the chase are Will Burns and Jamie Orton. The pair are currently tied on 261 points and have each made seven visits to the podium with Orton taking three race wins to Burns’ one. However, Orton is likely to sit out the Knockhill weekend as his wife is expecting their first baby to arrive imminently.

Nipping at their heels, Carl Boardley and Mark Davies round out the top five in the championship, with Boardley enjoying another strong showing with a third and fourth places over the course of the two races at Snetterton.

As if fans weren’t in for enough of a treat, Knockhill should feature four SuperCup outings instead of the usual three after round 11 was postponed due to a severely delayed timetable at Snetterton. As a result, the race has been rescheduled to take place after the normal qualifying session and before the other three already scheduled races in Scotland. As Tom Hibbert was drawn for the reverse grid pole position, you can expect to see him chasing his rostrum debut.

Both Ben Green and Reece Somerfield are eager to add to their single podium appearances of the season. In 2015, Somerfield narrowly missed out on a trophy and will certainly be one to watch this weekend. Don’t discount Callum Pointon or Rob Gaffney though, as they both looked incredibly racy in Norfolk.

In the AM class, it was another Colin White lockout as the points leader took his ninth victory in 10 races. The only other driver to have taken a race win, Grahame Tilley finished second in both outings, but was kept honest by his points rival Chris Ingram.

With James Guess absent, expect either Fraser Robertson or Mike Newbould to move into fifth in class. However, they will need to keep an eye on David Brookes who may be new to the championship but is already challenging for podium positions.

With both Wrigley and White enjoying a healthy championship lead in their respective classes, you can be sure their title rivals will be pushing themselves to the limit as they try to reduce the point’s deficits. With four action packed races ahead, make sure you never miss a minute by following @GinettaCars on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Review of the Ginetta Junior Championship at Snetterton, 29-30 July

The Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship visited Snetterton circuit last weekend, once again supporting the BTCC and racing in front of capacity crowds as well as live TV cameras.

Daniel Harper has been nothing short of a revelation in the Junior series thus far and the Douglas Motorsport driver continued this strong form into qualifying- taking fourth place. Enzo Fittipaldi continued to improve with seventh with series leader Stuart Middleton in an unaccustomed eighth place.

In race one, Harper belied his lack of experience with a stunning drive, working his way to the front by the third lap and then withstanding incredible pressure in the closing stages to take not only his second outright win in the series, but his sixth Rookie win to boot. Fittipaldi, continuing his improvement, had looked set for seventh but a spin in the closing stages dropped him down the order. Unfortunately Stuart Middleton made little progress crossing the line in eighth place.
In race two, Harper led away from pole position and in an action packed race appeared to have taken his second victory of the day. It was not to be though as the Stewards demoted the young Northern Irishman to third for his involvement in some of the hard fought action at the sharp end of the field. Once again Middleton struggled, at least by his lofty standards, coming home in seventh but losing his series lead.

Daniel Harpers Post Race InterviewDaniel Harper: ““It’s been an absolutely incredible weekend. I can’t believe that we came away with two wins on the road, and I can’t thank the whole Douglas Motorsport team enough for their hard work this weekend. Everything was thrown at me across the two races and they were definitely two of the hardest races of my career so far. Everyone wanted to win out there and did everything they could to beat me, so it was such hard work. Qualifying didn’t go perfectly to plan, but we knew we could work from fourth on the grid and look to make progress, and to come through to first on the road in both races is incredible for us. While the penalty is frustrating, the pace we’ve shown over the weekend gives me huge confidence for the rest of the season.”

Wayne Douglas, Team Principal, Douglas Motorsport “Daniel drove superbly all weekend and it was great to get two wins on the road. Enzo also drove well and had his best qualifying position of the year so far. Unfortunately, Stuart had a bad qualifying and the championship is so close it is hard to recover. I have no doubt he will be back on the ultimate pace in Knockhill in two weeks time though!”

The Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship continues at Snetterton Circuit this weekend as a packed grid of teenage drivers enjoys the motorsport experience of a lifetime. The UK’s premier series for aspiring racing stars of the future, this is the ideal place to begin the journey towards racing stardom. Ruth Harrison looks at how the drivers line up as the second half of the season begins.

It’s been a nail-biting season so far as the championship lead has swung back and forth between title rivals Stuart Middleton and Will Tregurtha. The pair arrive at Snetterton split by just four points and with Middleton taking three wins from four here on his way to the 2015 Ginetta Junior Winter Series, expect him to show a similar dominance this weekend.

Keep your eyes on Lewis Brown and Dave Wooder too. They each enjoyed Winter Series podiums last year and have taken wins this season. Brown has already enjoyed a first, second and third place whilst Wooder has become something of a regular on the podium, finish half of the 12 rounds on the rostrum.

Elsewhere on the grid Charlie Fagg, Connor Grady and Seb Perez each made an appearance on the podium here during the Winter Series. Fagg is the only one of the three to have added to his trophy collection this season, but you can be sure they will each be running at the sharp end this weekend along with Geri Nicosia and Kyle Hornby who are also chasing their maiden podium.

Leading the Rookie Class honours is Scholarship winner Daniel Harper. He’s been on the overall podium an impressive five times and holds a 42 point advantage over his closest class rival, Seb Priaulx.

The pair should be on the lookout for Harry King though. He took three out of four Rookie Class wins during last year’s Winter Series, losing out just the once to current rival Max Bird who made it onto the top step of the podium in the final race of the weekend.

Currently third in the Rookie Class, Tom Gamble will be doing his upmost to keep King (in fourth) behind him in the points, but they will need to keep an eye on Tom Wood, Enzo Fittipald, Jordan Collard and Anthony Ayres who may come under pressure from Dhyllan Skiba and Greg Johnson.

Having impressed on his championship debut at Croft with a rookie podium, Olli Caldwell will be hoping for a repeat performance, but he’s no longer the new kid on the block; Alex Day is set to make his first appearance of 2016 having contested the 2015 season.

With two races on the bill, it’s set to be another exciting weekend for the teenage racers as their inter-championship battles begin to become even more exciting. Make sure you never miss a minute by following @GinettaCars on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Randle wins for Douglas Motorsport as British F3 visits Spa-Francorchamps

Randle wins for Douglas Motorsport as British F3 visits Spa-Francorchamps

The 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship visited the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium last weekend for rounds 16,17 & 18 of the hotly contested series.

Spa Francorchamps

Location: Francorchamps, Stavelot,Belgium

Length: 7.004km (4.352 mi)

Spa Francorchamps

In practise both Enaam Ahmed and Thomas Randle were right on the pace with the duo second and third respectively in the first session before topping the timesheets in both Practise two and Practise three.

Enaam Ahmed and Thomas Randle

Enaam Ahmed and Thomas Randle

Unfortunately luck was not with the Douglas Motorsport pairing in qualifying as they failed to pick up a tow, crucial to the F3 cars on the high speed Grand Prix circuit, relegating Ahmed to fifth and Randle to seventh.
In the opening race, Ahmed drove well to finish fourth just over two seconds behind the winner, but Randle dropped to the back of the field after contact with another car sent him spinning, recovering to ninth by the flag.
Things were to get a lot better for Randle in race two however, as he immediately leaped from his ninth position starting position to cross the line at the end of the first lap in an impressive fourth place. Next on his list was his Douglas Motorsport team mate Ahmed and after a great battle, he finally slipstreamed by to take third on the Kemmel straight. Clearly fired up, he then snatched second place and began to close down longtime leader Toby Sowery. On the final lap he was close enough and replicated his earlier move to take the lead on the Kemmel straight, holding on to take his second British F3 win of the year. Emaam was right in the mix too, crossing the line in fourth place and only missing the final podium spot by two tenths of a second.
In the third and final race, Randle again battled mightily, eventually crossing the line in 5th place for some more valuable championship points whilst Ahmed was unfortunate enough to lose a wing after contact. He pitted and the team fitted a new one but the opportunity to make further progress was gone.Thomas Randle now lies 3rd in the title chase, with Enaam Ahmed in 5th with 6 rounds still to run.
Thomas Randle: “‘It was a challenging weekend at the beginning with the qualifying not going our way and being turned around in race one, but to bounce back really strong on Saturday with a win in race 2 and a fifth place in race 3 with good pace and not losing any ground to the championship leader left me feeling really positive and now I’m really looking forward to Snetterton..”

Wayne Douglas, Team Principal, Douglas Motorsport: “All in all the team is really happy, we have had both drivers win 2 races (on the road anyway) and go into the last two rounds with both drivers fighting for top 3 finishes in the championship.”

The next round of the 2016 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship partnered by Duo takes place at Snetterton on 6/7 August.
