Chadwick wins at Brands Hatch for Douglas Motorsport

Chadwick wins at Brands Hatch for Douglas Motorsport

Brands Hatch was the venue for rounds 16, 17 & 18 of the BRDC British F3 Championship, 2018.

Jamie Chadwick promised to bounce back after a disappointing weekend at Spa, and in race two that promise came true when Jamie took the race win for Douglas Motorsport. It was a moment for the history books also, as Jamie became the first female to win a British F3 race.

Although finishing second on the road to Pavan Ravishankar, Jamie knew that it was enough to take the win as she was certain Ravishankar would be given a penalty after a clear false start. There was some more good news for Douglas Motorsport as Arvin Esmaeili finished in 5th place.

Jamie Chadwick:
“I knew Pavan would get a penalty for the start, I was hoping he would get a drive through so I could just get my head down but I knew he was getting the penalty so I just sat behind him. I’ve had much harder races for lower positions so it was nice to have that one a little bit easier and to get that first win.

“It’s really hard to pass around here so I knew if I had track position, which I got on the first lap, my race wouldn’t be too bad. Fortunately starting a bit further up helped me out a bit. I’m absolutely delighted and a big thanks to the Douglas Motorsport team for making this happen.”

Rounds 13,14,15 Spa Francorchamps, July 21/22

The British F3 championship’s only meeting outside of the UK took place this weekend, at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. Douglas Motorsport welcomed a new driver, Belgian Max Defourney.  Defourney immediately demonstrated his pace during the practice rounds and then in qualifying, where he qualified sixth on the grid and just a couple of tenths away from pole. An impressive feat as he only drove the car for the first time in the hours before qualifying

However, his weekend came to a premature end, a shunt at Raidillon on the second lap of the first race meant he was out for the weekend. Douglas Motorsport’s team have always been incredible when it comes to repairing the cars, working through the night to get drivers back on track, but this time the car was damaged beyond repair.

The best result of the weekend was Jamie Chadwick’s 6th place finish in race 2. The result of the race was later amended and bumped Jamie up to 5th place!

Belgian Formula Renault Eurocup ace Max Defourney joins the Douglas Motorsport team for this weekend’s BRDC British F3 Championship rounds at Spa Francorchamps.

The 19-year-old will make his British F3 debut in his home country, and joins the series after proving himself as a junior single seater front-runner having won several races in Eurocup Formula Renault and the Formula Renault NEC series, finishing third in Eurocup in 2016 and second in NEC in the same year.

Defourny has also sampled FIA European F3 machinery having competed in the Nurburgring round in 2017, where he impressed by setting fastest lap in his first ever race, as well as scoring points.

Starting his career at the age of eight, Defourny enjoyed considerable success in karting which included winning the 2010 Benelux Karting Championship in KF5 and finishing second in the Belgian Karting Championship in the same year. Further progress saw him claim second in the 2011 Trofeo Invernal Ayrton Senna in the KF3 category.

He graduated to car racing in 2014 in French and Italian F4, before moving on to Formula Renault NEC in 2015, while also racing in selected events of the Alps and Eurocup categories. As well as his racing commitments, Defourny has also sampled more powerful single seaters including Formula V8 3.5 and GP3 cars in recent years.

Max Defourny: “I’m really looking forward to racing in BRDC British F3 this weekend at Spa Francorchamps with Douglas Motorsport. I’m hoping for strong results, I know Spa very well and have won here before in Formula Renault. Hopefully I can take that form into British F3.”

Team Principal Wayne Douglas: “We’re very pleased to welcome Max to the team for Spa Francorchamps. We’re looking forward to working with him and helping him to acclimatise to the F3 car. He is still very young but with his single seater experience, we believe he can deliver some excellent results at his home circuit this weekend. Our thanks to friends at MB Partners for their help in finalising this arrangement with Max for this weekend”.

Rounds 10,11,12 Silverstone, June 9/10

After a tough weekend at Snetterton last month, Silverstone was the venue for rounds 10, 11 and 12 of the BRDC British F3 championship.

Things started well in Friday practice, when Jordan Cane and Jamie Chadwick were 2nd and 4th fastest over the two sessions respectively.

Qualifying was a very close affair, with 0.687s separating the top 10 on what is the longest track of the championship. Starting the real racing in 4th place, Jordan Cane managed to pick up a place and take another podium finish in 3rd place. Starting in P6, Jamie Chadwick also made up one place and finished in 5th. Overall, a good result for the team, two drivers in the top 5.

The main focus was the start and we all seemed to bog down because of the grip, and it was really hot. If I’d had a better start I could have got Maini as well but then I was focussing on staying with Linus and Kush as I saw Maini was on a full set of new tyres while Linus was on two, same as me. We set the second fastest lap time while I was running in clear air and it was a good race, a big thanks to Douglas Motorsport for giving me a strong car and it puts us in a good position for tomorrow.

I was close enough to them where if they scrapped a bit more on the last lap maybe I could have popped a move, but I had a big gap behind me and I was hoping they’d fight a bit more but it is what it is, and I go home with another trophy.

Jordan Cane

The second race of the weekend saw the grid reversed. This season the reverse grid race have given a real advantage to those who wouldn’t normally be challenging for the lead, and that was confirmed in this race. Cane placed 8th, Chadwick 9th and Esmaeili finished in 12th position.

The next round promised much but did not deliver what we expected, Cane produced another 5th place to add to his podium in race 1, a good weekend for Cane. Chadwick finished in 13th with Arvin Aesmeli in 15th. All drivers and the team will be working hard to improve on these results in rounds 13,14,15.

Rounds 7,8,9 Snetterton. May 26/27

Round 6 at Oulton Park saw two collisions, each of which put  a Douglas Motorsport driver out of the race. Jamie Chadwick and Arvin Esmaeili were the victims of some bad driving by others. This time at Snetterton, in the first practice session on Friday it was Jordan Can’es turn. After a good practice day on Thursday, Jordan was fastest in most sectors and right up at the top of the practice times in each session. However on the Friday morning, on the first lap of the first practice session, Jordan was taken out of it by a car on slick tyres on a wet track who missed his braking at the end of the straight and went across the grass, taking Jordan Cane out of it when he emerged from the grass back onto the track.

Thursday testing went very well being fastest in most sectors in the dry sessions and a great race car underneath me, Friday however was a different story, on a wet track on the very first lap of the day another driver on slicks on a wet track missed his braking at the end of the straight and went straight across the grass, he t boned me as I was exiting the next corner. To be honest it could’ve been much worse, The car was all but destroyed from the roll hoop back, the team did a great job in getting me out for the last session but there were still issues in the car, Saturday we hoped we’d sorted everything but found further issues in both gearbox actuator and engine, despite that I think I drove as well as I ever had to get 6th in quali and fourth in the race 1. However it was evident that despite all the hardwork to get the car fixed we found more and more damage from the Friday crash. The boys worked past midnight to put in a brand new engine and I can’t thank them enough but a new engine still takes time to loosen up and for Sunday we still had a speed issue.

In race 2 the plan was just to get a good lap to move us up the grid for race 3 and I did mess this up a bit I didn’t leave a big enough gap to the car in front and kept catching him before the end of the lap, we were lacking engine but I could’ve done better. Race three was a bit of a procession but I drove well enough.

Jordan Cane

Arvin Esmaeili had a good weekend, finishing all races which included a 5th place in race 2 – his best result of the season so far. Jamie Chadwick couldn’t match the great results on the first weekend of the year, but nevertheless finished all 3 rounds with 7th in round 9 being the best.

Silverstone is next for rounds 10, 11 and 12 and each driver will be pushing for podium places.
